The Martin Brothers were four brothers who set up a pottery manufacturing business in London. Working from the 1873 to 1915, they were famous for exuberant and lively work that was often referred to as the origin of 'art pottery', or studio pottery as we know it today.

The Martin Brothers. June 2, 2023. The very distinctive and very popular Martin Brothers pottery was produced from around 1873, initially working from premises in Fulham in London. Robert Wallace Martin, the oldest brother, who had previously worked for J. B. Phillips, architectural sculptors, of Vauxhall Bridge Road, and had also studied art.

The Martin Brothers started what is regarded as Britain's first studio pottery in 1873 from a studio in Fulham, creating bizarre pottery pieces with a bent towards the grotesque all with an air of gothic fantasy. Jugs with faces, spoon warmers in the shape of bizarre animals with teeth or most famously the "Wally Birds", grotesque.

Robert Wallace Martin (1843-1923) trained as a sculptor. He attended the Lambeth School of Art, where he studied drawing, and the Royal Academy of Art.

The Pottery was first started in Fulham in 1873 by Robert Wallace, who had trained as a sculptor, until 1877 where the business.
